Rubens was an innovator during the Baroque period of art, known for his detailed brushwork and use of colour. This painting is a portrait of Ruben's employer who was the Spanish Duke of Mantua. Rubens stayed in Italy for eight years and travelled to Spain during his employment of the Duke. He was knighted by the kings of Spain and England during his career.
